The current Roule Fort in Cherbourg was built in the 19th century by Napoleon III atop earlier ruins. In 1940, the Germans overtook French resistance fighters here, digging tunnels and holding the fort until 1944, when Cherbourg became the first French harbor liberated by the United States after D-Day. Today the fort is home to the Museum of the Liberation, showcasing artifacts and information about the war, the Normandy landings and the French resistance.
