Roosevelt Island Tramway
While a visit to Roosevelt Island—a two-mile long narrow strip of land in the East River notorious for its former smallpox hospital, prison and asylum—might not be at the top of your itinerary, a quick round-trip ride (five minutes each way) via the newly restored Tramway offers some lofty and dramatic views of the East River and the Manhattan skyline ($2.25 each way).
