Rønne Rønne Denmark

The charming capital of Bornholm has centuries of history on view. The cobblestoned streets are lined with both 600-year-old half-timbered houses and “bomb houses,” red or yellow brick homes constructed to replace the one out of every 10 houses that were destroyed when the Russians bombed Bornholm on May 7–8, 1945, to oust a German garrison that refused to surrender. Easily explored on foot, this city of fewer than 14,000 residents is also home to a thriving local food and handicrafts market at St. Torv (the central square), Hjorths Fabrik (a ceramics museum) and Denmark’s oldest provincial theater still in operation.
