Billing itself as a café, restaurant and community centre for the growing creative class centered around East London’s Roman Road, Muxima moved to its current location on Roman Road Market proper in 2013 after having established itself as a local favourite around the corner on Fairfield Road.
Still a work-in-progress, the café was converted from a chicken shop (what else?) into a living-room-cum-wonderland of trinkets, antique paraphernalia and wonder. Dusty books share shelf space with thumbed copies of Dazed and Confused, while the rest of the DIY space is decorated with mirrors, reclaimed wood and plants. The vibe is overwhelmingly welcoming and one echoed by owner Isaac and his team.
Coffee is sourced around the corner from local favourite Counter Café, while a selection of excellent cakes, pastries and sandwiches are available all-day. Light meals like eggs and sandwiches are also available all-day with a rotating cast of specials, and the café hosts evening lounges and the occasional pop-up dinner to tie together its community credentials.
