Located between the Amerindian villages of Annai and Rupertee, where the Pakaraima foothills meet the tropical rainforest, Rock View Lodge is a great place to unwind after a few days of birdwatching on the nearby Rupununi River. Owned and managed by the gregarious Collin Edwards, the lodge offers basic (but very clean and comfortable) accommodation in self-contained rooms with en-suite bathes and cold water showers. They come in varying sizes, and work well for families. The grounds at this sustainable eco-tourism guesthouse are beautifully maintained and landscaped with hundreds of palms, fruit and flower trees that enhance the beauty of the surrounding rolling hills meets savannah scenery. There is a lovely swimming pool for cooling off, and evenings are spent in the old family ranch house with a fine art collection, library and if you’re lucky, storytelling. WiFi is available for a few hours per day, allowing you to access the digital world but not be consumed by it. Meals and all sorts of activities can be arranged - from horseback riding to canoe trips. The lodge is located south of the Iwokama Rainforest reserve on the main road from Georgetown and can be accessed by bus, air or vehicle. Try to plan a visit in February when they host the Rupununi Music & Arts Festival. An eco-oriented camping music festival (think Bonnaroo before it became known) in its inaugural year it drew acts from across South America, the Caribbean and as far away as Europe.
