On a sunny day, the view from the Rock of Gibraltar seems to go on forever... Africa to the south, Spain to the west, the Mediterranean Sea to the east, and the charming town of Gibraltar below. A short cable car ride zips you up to the top of the rock, but if you're really ambitious, you can climb a series of stairs all the way to the top. A colony of nearly 300 Barbary Apes live on the Rock. The apes roam freely and often congregate outside the visitor center and cafe, hoping to catch an unsuspecting visitor who didn't get the memo and brought food along. They are amazing to watch but will swiftly and adeptly assault anyone with so much as a crinkly plastic bag. Once off the Rock, the town offers a variety of shopping from quaint shops to chain stores and many cafes offering an array of English food--fish and chips or Shepard's pie--and a pint of your favorite brew. Gibraltar is a great day trip to include in your tour of southern Spain!
