Robert Burns Birthplace Museum At this family-friendly museum, visitors can learn all about the Ayrshire Bard by listening to his words, playing games that unravel his mysteries, and examining the many books and manuscripts he wrote during his lifetime. Next door, in the cozy three-room Burns Cottage, you can visit his birthplace and see where he received his earliest schooling. Afterward, explore the landscaped gardens and Grecian-style temple (designed by Sir Thomas Hamilton to honor Burns), then walk to the Brig o’ Doon (a 15th-century cobblestone bridge that provided the setting for one of the poet’s most famous works). About a mile down the road, you’ll also find the Alloway Auld Kirk, a 16th-century church ruin that inspired Burns’s epic poem "Tam o’Shanter." His father and sister, along with several other notable Scots, are buried in the graveyard.
