White Sands, Blue Water & Tranquility at No. 2 Beach
I had to blink twice to assure that I was witnessing reality and not trapped in a fantasy of paradise. No. 2 Beach, approximately 16 Km out of the busy streets of Freetown, is an awesome escape. Apparently the ideal time to go is December - February. However, I was on vacation with my mom and three children, 14, 11, and 7 in July, but we still had a blast. It seemed as if we had the entire spotless beach to ourselves. The tides were pretty high, so we just soaked our feet in the ocean. The special treat, however, was the lagoon which we swam in and took a fascinating canoe ride on. After playing tons of imaginary games with my sons along the lagoon we enjoyed the most delightful lunch. Skewered grilled shrimps with curried rice. Even my 7 year old picky eater was looking for seconds. The staff was extremely friendly and accommodating.
The amenities are quite simple. Well kept latrines and simple beach chairs. There is also a modest guesthouse.
If you are staying in Freetown. Most hotels and lodges offer SUV vehicle rentals with a driver. It's about an hour and a half trek filled with the most beautiful visual stimulations such as a serene mountain side, flowing rivers, and waterfalls.
