Guam National Wildlife Refuge

This was the place that started it all for me with Guam. A friend was stationed there and just after new year’s she posted a photo of herself, her husband and daughter snorkeling here on New Year’s Day. Of course it was cold and rainy here in Northern California and the sight of that white sand, warm sun and turquoise water elicited a long sigh from me and I decided then and there that I had to visit. My entire week on Guam was magical, and at the end of my trip my friend drove us up to Ritidian Point, and the northern most tip of the tiny island didn’t disappoint me. We were the only people there, and the stark white sand stretched beyond my own line of sight unbroken by anyone’s footprints. It was low tide so many of the coral formations were visible from shore beneath the crystal clear water like dark spots on the face of rare turquoise. The coral reefs incrementally broke the incoming waves which would have otherwise thoroughly pounded the shore, turning them into gentle swells that barely crested against the shore. The quiet lapping of the water, the soft wind and the complete absence of any man-made sound was magical. It’s no small feat these days to find a place that is truly void of man-made sounds; this was such a place. Here was a place where you can sit with your own thoughts, or with no thoughts at all, and this small piece of land would sing to you the same song either way, only asking for your respect and appreciation in return.

Beautiful Ritidian Point Beach

What I love about Ritidian point is how few people there are. The beach is absolutely beautiful and nearby are trails you can take for a short walk/hike. The Latte Loop features butterflies, caves and Tarzan-style vines. The area looks like the set from an Indiana Jones movie.
