Restaurant La Faura
Grab a plastic table on the terrace and watch the orange sun sink behind the Lepontine Alps at this casual, rustic, family-run ristorante in an old farmhouse atop a set of steep stone steps. Because it’s situated on the popular Strada Alta hiking trail in the tiny village of Cavagnago in Switzerland’s Italian-speaking Canton Ticino, La Faura is popular with backpackers. But locals similarly come for the affordably priced fare: oversize bowls brimming with pesto-fortified minestrone and slabs of vegetable lasagna. Jugs of hearty Ticinese merlot made from vineyards in the valleys below the village are restorative after a day of hoofing through the vertical terrain.
