Rio Tinto Mines
1 Plaza Ernest Lluch
Rio Tinto Mines Gold, silver and copper mining began in Rio Tinto in 3,000 B.C.E. by Iberian tribes. In 1873, the still-active mines were sold to the British, who proceeded to virtually colonize the area, creating small English suburbs, golf courses, soccer pitches, tennis greens and a steam engine to shuttle both workers and ore to and from the mines. The open-pit mines left behind vividly colored lunar landscapes that are weird and stunning.
