Although many tourists head to Kona and Kohala of the Big Island, Hilo has something special to offer. It's a sleepy city where you can stay at a B&B on the bay, get a great meal, and follow it up with a long walk through Richardson Beach park. There Hawaiians gather to BBQ, hang out, and do a bit of body surfing. Early in the morning you'll see the more serious surfers hit the waves or catch a glimpse of some of the great rowing organizations. There's even a women's Senior Citizen Rowing team. Keep walking until the end of the beach park, and you'll be rewarded with a quiet scene of turtles bathing among the lava rocks—and maybe even a troubadour too.
