Restaurante Coral Reef

36, Cahuita, Costa Rica

This no-frills eatery is not to be underestimated. With many establishments catering to spring breakers, this is some of the most authentic Costa Rican food to be found on the Caribbean coast. Bonus points for cleanliness, which can be a problem this close to the ocean in an area that rarely falls below 75% humidity. The menu includes Costa Rican, Caribbean, and Italian cuisines, but for the best experience, order the casado or rice and beans with your choice of protein. The casado comes with fluffy white rice, subtly spiced black beans, steamed veggies, a side salad, and sweet plantains. The rice and beans dish comes with gallo pinto (black beans and rice cooked in coconut milk), the same veggies and salad, and savory mashed plantain fritters. If sweet and fruity blended cocktails are up your alley, you will be in luck here.
