Akelarre is the oft-overlooked star in San Sebastián's very studded crown. Take a cab up to the restaurant, perched on the heights of Monte Igeldo, for a haute tasting menu. Many love Akelarre for the fact that you can order whichever of three tasting menus you want despite what your fellow diners opt for.
So order whichever tickles your fancy, singlely flavored pasta noodles with red mullet or oxtail, or...This is the "alternative" three-star San Sebastián spot, presided over by one of the founding fathers of the new Basque cuisine.
Go at dinner for the most romantic experience, but go for lunch if what you are in it for is the view. The slightly dated dining room is warmed by a kind staff and the chef Pedro Subijana's own jovial presence.
