Stairway to Heaven – Rooftop Dining at Luna in Hvar Town
Up a flight of stairs in a narrow alley off of the main square in Hvar Town, a tongue-in-cheek sign outside the restaurant Luna warns “for Lunatics only.” After entering and ascending a flight of stairs adorned with multi-lingual proclamations that you are climbing the stairway to heaven, you pass an open kitchen where the staff call out warm greetings, before another short stairway deposits you onto a rooftop terrace – magical under the night sky. There is fortunately nary a lunatic in sight but many satisfied diners and the sense that you have landed in foodie heaven. This is al fresco dining at its best: a quirky and appealing setting coupled with friendly and attentive service. It is buzzing with a convivial atmosphere and completely devoid of pretension. The waiter delivers a perfectly chilled Pošip wine which pairs wonderfully with the complimentary fish pâté which arrives immediately afterwards. Luna’s menu is a seafood lover’s delight, typical of Croatia, with several other options should seafood not be your thing. The grilled calamari is highly recommended and the seafood pasta simply bursting with flavor. It is the ideal spot to linger over several courses and soak up the Hvar vibe. After a night at Luna, you’ll be happy to have joined the ranks of the other “Lunatics” who have experienced its many delicious culinary offerings.
