I lived in Moscow for a year a decade ago. My favorite way to capture the spirit and magnitude of this city was to take a post-midnight walk through Red Square. It would often be near deserted at that time and was never better than when snow was falling coating the Kremlin and St. Basils in a beautiful, glistening coat. It felt like the city was mine.

Ice Skating at Red Square

Ice skating at Red Square is the ultimate winter wonderland experience. Shadowed by St. Basil’s Cathedral and the Kremlin, the ice rink at Red Square takes center stage in front of the GUM shopping mall. After a few spins on the ice, visit the surrounding outdoor markets and kiosks for traditional Russian souvenirs, wooden nesting dolls and fox fur hats.

From Russia With Love...

I got to Red Square early, to try to get a picture with as few people in it as possible. It was a cold and cloudy day...but, the beauty of this fascinating place still managed to reveal itself. With Saint Basil’s Cathedral in the distance, Mr Lenin, in eternal slumber to the right, and the POP of orange from the gentleman’s uniform, who was diligently keeping things clean...this remains one of my favorite photos from my travels! Thanks!
