Red Bay Basque Whaling Station
The Red Bay Basque Whaling Station is the earliest and best-preserved whaling station from the time when Basque mariners used this area as a base for whale hunting in the 1500s. In 2013, it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The station includes Red Bay, the town of Red Bay, and Saddle Island, which is across Red Bay Harbour from the town. For such a small area, it’s chock full of historic sites, shipwrecks and whalebone deposits.
