While driving the ring road around Iceland in May, my wife and I parked on the side of the road (our rented Toyota Yaris couldn't make it to this roughshod parking lot) and walked into Raufarholshellir ice cave to explore. There were literally no other people around and no guard rails or blockades, just a sign saying the cave was “quite difficult to explore.” We went in with headlamps we had bought at Target for $5.99 the day before we left the U.S. This is close to the entry. Further into the cave it got extremely dark and we realized how useless our headlamps were. We were in the cave for almost two hours and not a single other person showed up. The only sounds were the dripping of water from the ceiling, our breathing and our boots as we tried not to slip on the ice.
