Buffalo of Tana Toraja
In the heart of Tana Toraja in South Sulawesi, Indonesia, everything revolves around the buffalo. High status members of society are recognized by the sets of horns adorning their homes, which have upturned roofs reminiscent of the same horns. Certain buffalo fetch astonishing prices and families save up for years to purchase only the best animals to ultimately sacrifice at their relatives' elaborate funerals. But even with this ultimate destiny, Toraja buffalo appear to lead a pretty idyllic existence.
