Rano Raraku

The crater of Rano Raraku volcano
After viewing the scattered Moai on the slopes of Rano Raraku, do the (easy) hike up and into the crater. It's a totally different feeling in there, all reeds in water and grazing wild horses. Easy to imagine the world without civilization.

The Moai of Rano Raraku
All those faces Moai photos you've seen online and in books? Most likely taken here, which was a quarry for the statues. They remain scattered around, fallen over and some unfinished. Hiking trails get up close, but no touching.
