Rainforest Trek: not for the faint of heart. Due to its intense nature, this epic excursion is not often booked, and as such, is a rare gem no more than 30 minutes from San Jose, where a guide from Rainforest Adventures Costa Rica leads guests through protected territory near Braulio Carrillo. The journey stars with a leisurely air tram over top of the rainforest canopy, taking passengers to the heart of the reserve, where the real trek begins. Walking stick in hand, everyone follows the leader through the thick of the rainforest, scrambling down the mountain, and stopping along the way to learn about the surrounding flora and fauna. At the bottom of the mountain, hikers are treated to a packed bag lunch, and the reward of a gorgeous swimming hole, fed by a waterfall from the river cutting through the park. Hiking back up the mountain afterward is difficult, but worthwhile, and the oxygen provided by abundant leafy greenery helps a great deal. There is truly no better way to see the rainforest than being completely immersed in it.
