Quinta da Aveleda

Q.ta da Aveleda, 4560 Penafiel, Portugal

Aveleda is one of the white and green wines that I usually drink, so since I was nearby I decided to visit the Quinta da Aveleda estate. I was astonished by the beautiful garden. Among diversified, ancient and some rare species of trees, there is a Manueline Window from the 16th century, where it seems that King John IV was crowned King of Portugal. Also there are two fountains, the Our Lady Vandoma (patron of city of Porto) and Four Sisters (daughters of the owner). In the Goat’s Tower I saw a head peeking outside, this house was built to house dwarf goats, being these animals a symbol of fertility and abundance. It’s time for a wine tasting and to complement it, some cheese produced in the estate. There is two kinds of cheese, the soft one and the mature one, produced with manual labour. This estate is still a family owned business and is located in the heart of the Green Wine Demarcated Region. Don’t forget to take a look at the shop, among the wine and cheese, you can buy homemade jams. Quinta da Aveleda is very close to Solar Egas Moniz and it was another suggestion made by We Love Small Hotels (http://www.welovesmallhotels.com/en/).
