Puu o Mahuka Heiau

Tourists tend to unknowingly miss this luakini heiau—a sacred place of worship and sacrifice for the ancient Hawaiians—set on a bluff over Waimea Bay. Legend has it the stacked-stone construction was built in the 17th century by menehune, the mythical little people responsible for many of Hawaii's fishponds and temples. The ruins are still revered today—people regularly leave offerings to honor the gods here.
