Finding a Tourist-Free Respite (and Mexican Microbrews) in Playa Del Carmen
It isn’t easy to escape the throngs of tourists that flock to Playa Del Carmen in Mexico’s Mayan Riviera slung some desperately needed sun and beach time as a break from their colder climes. Unlike nearby Tulum, Playa and Cancun to the north were themselves built up in the 1970s for the very purpose of being all-inclusive escapes for the jet set, and now, charter vacationers.

That said, it is possible to find some solace and tastes of real Mexico and the Yucatan peninsula amongst the warren of souvenir shops along Playa’s infamous Fifth Ave.

Anyone looking for a watering hole specializing in real Mexican microbrews and not the ubiquitous Corona or Dos Equis should try to find Puerto Cocina Urbana, tucked away in a treed-over courtyard at the north end of the Fifth Ave strip. Boasting a comprehensive menu of Mexican microbrewed beers from all over the country, Puerto Cocina Urbana also provides a fantastically tourist-free location to chill out and immerse yourself in Mexican beer culture with locals looking to escape the heat. All beers are served with plates full of sliced cucumber topped with fresh lime juice and dusted with ancho chili powder – simple, refreshing and addictive.
