Toledo, Spain's old Capital
Toledo, once the glowing capital of Spain
, is today mostly a tourist attraction within the walls of the fort-city. But inside those walls are museums, cathedrals and churches, an ancient synagogue—now a museum documenting the Sephardic Jews, the home and museum of the late Renaissance painter El Greco, numerous hotels, hostals, and restaurants. There are day tours from Madrid
available, but the city really deserves a longer look. The old bridges, buildings and city gates, such as Puerta del Cambron are impressive medieval structures easily taking one's imagination back to days of armored knights and powerful kingdoms.
