Zinacantan, a few miles west of San Cristobal de las Casas in Chiapas, is home to many skilled hip loom weavers. They make huipils (shirts), table cloths, place mats, and blankets by weaving lengths of cloth and then sewing them together. Pascuala is one of the more famous weavers, employing many members of her family, passing down skills from one generation to the next. It's hard work and requires a lot of concentration and stamina. Regularly scheduled tours are available in San Cristobal for visiting the towns of San Juan Chamula and Zinacantan. Most tours take you to a weaving workshop where you can see the weaving in progress.
