Prague’s fairy tale vibe stems in large part from this magnificent structure that stands guard at the top of Castle Hill, in the historical Hradčany district. With roots dating to the 9th century, Prague Castle—now the seat of the Czech Republic’s Head of State—is part of an estate that stretches over 750,000 square feet, making it the largest castle complex in the world. So set aside plenty of time to explore the grounds, which include a Gothic cathedral, monastery, towers, and gardens. There are also four palaces, plus several museums, from the Toy Museum to exhibits curated by the National Gallery. Check the event schedule before you visit: in addition to the regular changing of the guard spectacular, the complex hosts concerts, cultural events, and an annual summer Shakespeare festival.
