After having stayed in many of Portugal's Pousadas I have to say that I have a few favorites and Alvito is high on my list.
This pousada is located in a 15th century walled castle. The castle, it's walls, and its grounds have been transformed into a luxury hotel in the Pousada group.
Our room was beautifully appointed both in the sleeping area and the bathroom. (Next visit, I will book the tower suite as we were given a tour). I looked out the window into the huge medieval courtyard and saw the gorgeous white peacocks and peahens. Their loud screeches were somewhat of a shock coming from such good-looking creatures! The swimming pool is located in the gardens and is a stunning azure blue to match Portugal's skies. The herbs used in the kitchen come from these delightful gardens.
The restaurant proudly serves regional specialities such as lamb, pork and clams, and cod dishes. The traditional sweets are a feast to the eyes and yummy to eat. The pousada has an excellent wine cellar which carries many wonderful Alentejo wines.
Don't miss the little village outside the castle walls. There are many little shops, a lovely old church, and several cafes. The locals are very friendly and helpful.
The area offers nature trails, horse riding, biking, and near-by canoe rides.
This is a pousada that I have on my list to revisit. Such an historic town full of charm but most of all... an extremely peaceful spot.
