After a dizzying van ride through streets as narrow as U.S. sidewalks and deafeningly abuzz with Vespas and constantly honking mini-cars, our driver stopped at this terrace for a quick photo op on our way out of town. The weather was cold, the wind was biting, and the cloud cover not ideal, but I can't imagine capturing Naples any better than this. This photo barely illustrates the complexity, chaos, squalor, and majesty of Naples, and it is a city that is truly one-of-a-kind. It is certainly not a place I would recommend the uninitiated attempt alone, but for those with a small amount of bravery and a passion for experiences that can't be gotten elsewhere, Naples delivers this and so much more. Don't go just for the pizza. It's true it is the best in the world, but to do only that cheapens the experience. Strike out into the heart of city and get away from the hotels and tourist pizza places like Pizzeria da Michele. Outside of avoiding long lines of tourists, you'll experience Naples as it really is, not just what others have told you it is.
