Three short trails take floaters on a 25-mile total journey along Texas’s wildlife-rich coast. They interconnect and overlap, making it easy to change course along the way. The Fishpond Trail rolls for 12.3 miles, extending from Port O’Connor to Saluria Bayou, via a bevy of swamps and cuts, and snipping the side of Espiritu Santo Bay. There, it meets the 8.28-mile South Loop Trail—especially stunning when it bursts into bloom. The North Loop continues toward Sunday Beach along the Gulf of Mexico. Don’t miss Lighthouse Cove, tucked into the sugary sand near Matagorda Lighthouse, or the Confederate trench lines that recall the fighting that occurred in this area during the Civil War.
