The Port Gamble Museum of Shells & Natural History may not be a real museum, but then, Port Gamble isn’t a real town, either. (It’s an unincorporated part of Kitsap County that was formerly a mill town.) The museum, such as it is, is located on the second floor of the General Store, which itself is worth perusing for old-time candies, sodas, and novelties. Dusty cases line the balcony, filled with geoducks, square starfish, fanciful shell-art pictures and sculptures, and the occasional stuffed armadillo riding a king crab. Blurry typewritten (or handwritten) cards aren’t always terribly informative, but definitely have a handmade labor-of-love charm. It takes about an hour to go through this small, free museum, so if you’re in the area, check out this eccentric collection.
