Port Douglas

Continue north from Cairns further up the Cape York Peninsula and in an hour you'll reach Port Douglas, a breezy tropical town known for its restaurants (with some 60 in town and at nearby resorts), art galleries, boutiques and walking trails. Port Douglas was a significant commercial center in the 19th century before the opening of the Cairns-to-Kuranda Railway (now called the Kuranda Scenic Railway) led to its decline. In the 1980s, it began a second life as a resort destination, with residents and visitors alike attracted by its stunning location on Four Mile Beach and proximity to both the Daintree Rain Forest and the Great Barrier Reef.
