Azorean Restaurant: “Era uma vez O Gato Mia” or… “Once upon a time The Cat Meowed”Surprisingly, this is the literal translation for the name of one of the newest restaurants in Ponta Delgada. It opened in the summer of 2012, and the recipe for its success is quite simple: mix São Miguel and Terceira cuisine and season it with a bit of Alentejo flavors - a south-central region in the mainland.
When the starters arrive to the table, you are invited to travel between different and surprising flavors: crispy goat cheese and apple green, regional sausages with marinated tuna, ‘moelas’, Portuguese chicken gizzards, and different types of cheese.
For main dish, if the cat didn’t eat it all, you should order their specialty: Alcatra. This traditional beef dish from Terceira Island is slow-roasted in a clay pot with wine (red or white), pepper, smoked lard, bay lead, garlic and onion. But if you are inspired by the views, you may risk a maritime adventure: try the Codfish or the Octopus served in a tile, the Fish Rice or the Tuna with Sesame Seeds.
A typical Portuguese meal is not finished without an amazing dessert. You will have a hard time deciding between the Chocolate Mousse or the Panacota with Raspberry Jam from the island.
