Rio’s answer to fast food (tropical juices squeezed from every imaginable fruit, alongside the widest variety of sandwiches and snacks known as salgados) is well represented in Rio’s southern quarters. Polis Sucos is a classic of classics, with more than fifty years serving up the very same, seemingly unbeatable menu, if the vox populi is t o be trusted. There’s just a stand-up bar—no chairs or tables, comme il faut, where the staff’s slinging obscene quantities of juice and açaí next to sandwiches like the palmira cheese special (the biggest seller) or the bacon-cheeseburger. A guilty pleasure that’s pure Carioca.
