This central plaza has an interesting past. In the early 1600's "auto-da-fe" took place. This was the ritual of public self-punishment of condemned heretics during the peak of the Spanish Inquisition. Today, its main attractions include the Palace of the Inquisition (museum), the Cathedral, and the Gold Museum. Leaving the Plaza along the side of the Palace of the Inquisition you will see a small barred window with a cross above it through which, legend has it, citizens would throw written accusations of their neighbors' heresies.
