Playa Cerritos

La Paz, B.C.S., Mexico

The one-hour drive from Cabo San Lucas to Todos Santos is dotted with tempting detours. Chief among them is Playa Cerritos, one of the few Pacific-side beaches safe for swimming. Of course, it’s not the swimming conditions that attract legions of surfers each year, but the wonderful swells and breaks, which invariably make for an excellent outing on the waves. You can rent a board or sign up for lessons at Mario Surf School, and otherwise there’s plenty to support a day at the beach. Grab a bite at the Cerritos Beach Club, pick up a trinket or two from one of the local artisans, and treat yourself to a shoreline horseback ride or an oceanfront massage.

Cerritos Beach

Cerritos Beach is the place to be for warm waves, surfing, swimming and more. Known locally as one of the best beaches in the area, this is a great place to relax and get in the water. Many other beaches have breaks or riptides that make it dangerous to swim. Know that there are lots of beach vendors here but they are not agressive. You can also take in a very reasonably priced massage if you’re so inclinde. One note, pick up food or beverages at the market on the road in as there isn’t anything currently available on the beach.

Cerritos Beach

Less touristy than Cabo and still a hidden gem, Cerritos Beach between Cabo and Todos Santos has great waves for surfing as well as safe surf for swimming (one of the few beaches in the area where the rip tide is less treacherous and it’s safe to swim). The laidback low-key vibe here draws surfers from all over the world. The beach has its own restaurant, the Cerritos Beach Club, where you can wash off sand at its beach shower as well as rent umbrellas and chairs, and, of course, order a mojito or margarita. Nearby Todos Santos has been named a Mexican “Pueblo Mágico” with its charming atmosphere and many resident artists, some of whom can be found on the beach selling their works. The spring break crowd has yet to find their way from Cabo, so now’s the time to jump in and experience the beach before it’s “discovered.”
