On a whim driving from Los Angeles back to San Francisco, we decided to take a detour & check out Pinnacles National Monument. What a great decision. We exited I-5 at Coalinga, then took 198 to 25. The drive alone was well worth the detour. We rarely saw other cars as we drove through rolling hills, forest & farmland, all dressed in their springtime best. We arrived at Pinnacles in time to take a nice loop hike before dark, not all the way up to the Pinnacles, but to where we could view them. Because it was spring, there were wildflowers everywhere. Bonus benefit - we missed rush hour traffic getting back to the Bay Area.
