Western Australia is home to several pink lakes, which likely get their rosy hue from high concentrations of salt-tolerant algae. About seven kilometers (four miles) away from Esperance is Pink Lake; however, the water here rarely turns this color anymore. To see a true bubble-gum-colored lake, book a tour to Lake Hillier, on Middle Island in the Recherche Archipelago. You can’t swim in the water, but the contrast of the lake’s pink cast against the green forest and blue sea surrounding it is a spectacular sight. Most tours are by helicopter—the best way to view the spectacle is from above—and there are some cruising vessels that will take you right to its salt-crusted shore.
