Pine Garden

Overlooking Hualien, the Meilun River and the Pacific Ocean, this former military compound, built in 1942 during the Japanese occupation of Taiwan, is strategically set at the city's highest point. Some 200 century-old pine trees surround the four well-preserved World War II–era structures, including a bomb shelter. The panoramic views and tranquil setting are the main draws, but there’s quite a lot of history here to discover: In one of the buildings, kamikaze pilots were wined and dined before their final missions.
