Aside from the Newhall Preserve, the Pickney Wildlife Refuge is the best place to spot animals that inhabit South Carolina. The refuge spreads across some 4,000 acres in Beaufort County and is right over the bridge from Hilton Head Island. Pickney Island is the only island that is part of the refuge and open to the public. Its inhabitants include such animals as herons, white-tailed deer, alligators, and even bald eagles.
Fair warning: the refuge has erratic opening hours and is closed on Sundays.
