Pier Arts Centre
Most major Scottish island chains now feature a modern arts center but Orkney's Pier Arts Centre is a little different. It fills many roles—from gallery space to bookshop to events venue—in the town of Stromness, about 22 kilometers (14 miles) west of Kirkwall. Its permanent collection of modern and contemporary visual art is perhaps the most significant in northern Scotland, much of it donated by author, peace activist and philanthropist Margaret Gardiner (1904–2005), a friend to and patron of many leading figures in postwar British Modernist art.
