Located near the head of Queen Charlotte Sound, the port of Picton is a popular base for visitors exploring the Marlborough Sounds. The town's history dates back hundreds of years, having long been the site of a fortified Maori settlement. After the New Zealand Company purchased the village and relocated the Maori in 1844, it became a vital shipping center connecting the country's North and South Islands. Today, yachts—not ships filled with meat and wool—dot the harbor, which sits in the shadow of lush green slopes and is lined with popular waterfront restaurants.
