Learning about Slow Travel
I had my epiphany in the fall of 2012 when I spent five weeks in Rome. Before I departed, everyone inquired what I would "do" there, to which I replied "nothing". This generally had the effect of a curious expression and a blank stare. I just wanted to live in the moment; spend an entire afternoon sitting at a sidewalk café, wandering the neighbourhoods, going to the many markets for daily groceries, and watching the (other) tourists rush about.

A memorable example came on a sunny warm afternoon as I sat nursing a cold beer at a little table perched precariously on the uneven cobblestones. A tourist emerged from the café clutching her Frommer's guide marked up with post it notes. I overheard her telling her companions that from 13:00 to 14:30 hours they were scheduled for the Campo de Fiori market, so they had to hurry to make it in time. I sighed, leaned comfortably back in my chair, and resumed my afternoon of nothingness.
