Phnom Penh, Cambodia
Walking the streets of Phnom PenhWhile walking around the streets of Phnom Penh in the morning you'll notice many saffron robed men with bowls in hand. These are monks collecting their daily ration of food from small business and home owners, who earn merit and connection to the holy world by giving the monks food. Monks only eat before noon, so you won't see them out at other times of day with their alms bowl and they can not accept money. Unlike in many other countries, monks in Cambodia can be monks for a few years or even a few months and by serving as a monk give their family status, fulfill their karma, or honor a relative who has passed away.
