I had an opportunity to visit Cambodia in 2011 while I was traveling through the Philippines, Singapore and Indonesia. My friend had moved back to Cambodia and he invited my friends and I to visit if "we were ever in the neighborhood". This was an experience of a lifetime. Not only did we see the tourist areas, we also experienced many restaurants, activities, nightlife that tourists normally wouldn't experience. Seeing not only the beauty, but the heartbreaking poverty, learning about the sex trafficking of young women and children, made me want to do something when I returned to the U.S. I now volunteer with an organization, Friendship with Cambodia, who offers tours to Cambodia that would be the closest to the type of experience that I had when I visited. A great tip: if you're feeling homesick (either US or Ireland) head out the Paddy Rice, and have a beer and listen to my fave band, "Holiday in Cambodia".
