Pfund's Dresdner Molkerei - The Most Beautiful Milk Store in the World
Do you often lay awake nights pondering, “Where is the most beautiful milk store in the world”?
Well, ponder no more. According to many claims (not yet verified), the Guinness Book of World Records has declared Pfund's Dresdner Molkerei as “The Most Beautiful Milk Store in the World.”
Founded in 1880 by the Pfund brothers, the shop survived two world wars including the massive Dresden firebombing in February 1945.
Just as miraculously, the business survived the push to replace the beautiful hand-painted tiles with GDR deco plastic tiles when business became state-run in socialist East Germany. Just as famous for its massive selection of cheeses as it was for its tile work, the selection was reduced to only 3 types of cheeses and milk under socialist control.
The business all but disappeared after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. Through obtaining inheritance rights, however, the family was able to regain ownership and restore the business to its former greatness. If you love beautiful tile work… If you love cheeses, this is the place to go.
Although the shop is virtually unknown to American travelers, it is a major stop for German tour buses. So be warned… Go there early to avoid the throngs of tourists getting on/off the buses which pull up in front.
