Petain Rd

Petain Rd, Singapore

This row of double-story terrace houses along Petain Road just north of Little India is a wonderful example of the highly ornamented style favored by wealthy Peranakan merchants in the 1920s and ‘30s. The outside walls and five-foot-wide covered walkway are decorated with colorful ceramic tiles. On the front of the neoclassical columns are whimsical plaster reliefs of birds, trees, and flowers. I can just picture the uncles gathering here in the shade to show off their songbirds in ornate cages. As I walked through Little India, these houses were such a lovely and unexpected find.
