The best known site in the Los Glaciares National Park in Argentina (Patagonia) is worth seeing up close. But how do you get close to a huge advancing glacier that is more than 3 miles wide at its front and over 20 stories high? Luckily the park has provided an extensive maze of balconies and viewing points in front of the glacier to try to take it all in. The viewing points are scattered around putting you at different levels and distances from the glacier - but no matter where you are, you will be small...miniscule...insignificant amidst this ice giant. If you stay long enough and sit on a bench you will be guaranteed to hear the glacier crack and groan as ice calves off the front and slams into the water leaving a huge wave in it’s wake. Entrance to the park is 100 pesos or about $20. You can drive yourself to the viewing area, or find a day tour from El Calafate. Pack a lunch and go spend the day in front of what some people call the 8th Wonder of the World.
