A 13-mile drive from Abilene will bring you to Buffalo Gap, and one of the state’s best steakhouses. Cattleman Tom Perini opened this landmark restaurant in 1983. Since then it has been rated Number 3 in the state by Texas Monthly, listed as one of “24 Reasons to Love Texas” by Saveur, and dubbed an "American Classic" by the James Beard Foundation. The menu is straight forward, with three types of steak: ribeye, tenderloin, and strip. All are cooked with locally sourced mesquite and almost everyone who has been here comes away with a serious beef/mesquite addiction. If you find yourself unable to pull away from the table—don't. The ranch also has guest quarters for a full-on mesquite getaway.
