Pepper’s at Uptown in McAllen Texas was quite a surprise. Located in a shopping center along the main drag I really didn’t know what to expect with a sort of sports bar, casual vibe. Chef/General manager Richard Sauceda has the culinary drive in fine dining, and his staff provides spot on service. The extensive menu made it difficult to choose from all of the offerings, so chef decided to give us a broad sampling of his offerings. These included a fantastic espresso rubbed steak, fresh fish and shellfish from the Gulf of Mexico. I just love seafood, and when it’s truly fresh and prepared properly, it can be outstanding. My favorites where the mini crab cakes made with Gulf blue crab and drizzled with an orange chipotle sauce, Pico de Gallo and salsa verde. The balance of the flavors worked perfectly, the crab was prominent, and the dish was still refreshing. As for the espresso rubbed steak served on a sizzling platter, this was probably the most popular among our dining party. I am a steak person, but when presented with a house specialty named The Red Drum, all I can say is that I am now a believer. Grilled Redfish served over saffron rice, white wine cream sauce, crab, tomato and spinach, it was superb, the fish moist, and just the right amount of cream sauce as to not overpower the delicate fish. Pepper's is one of those places that you could easily drive right by and never know what you’ve missed. Make the time to visit, it is one of a kind and absolutely worth it.
